Metro Redux Gets Major Next-Gen Update: 4K, 120 FPS, DLSS and More

Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux are getting free next-gen updates with 4K textures, 120 FPS, DLSS, PSSR, DualSense features and more.

Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux are getting another major technical upgrade, bringing the classic Metro games closer to modern hardware with improved visuals, higher frame rates, enhanced audio, and platform-specific features. The upcoming update is not being presented as a full remake or a traditional remaster. Instead, 4A Games describes it as an “enhanced experience” designed to modernize the existing Redux versions.

The free update will introduce a wide range of improvements across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. From 4K textures and improved animations to DLSS, PSSR, DualSense features, and spatial audio, the update aims to make both games feel considerably more modern without replacing the original experience.

Metro Redux Is Getting a Major Visual Upgrade

The biggest part of the update focuses on visual quality. Both Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux will receive higher-quality 4K textures, improved animation quality, more detailed environments, and upgraded audio.

Lighting and shadow quality are also being revisited, while particle effects are being improved to create a more detailed atmosphere. These changes should be particularly noticeable in Metro’s underground environments, where lighting, smoke, fire, dust, and environmental details play a major role in creating the series’ distinctive atmosphere.

Performance is another major focus. The updated games are targeting native 4K resolution at 60 FPS, alongside an upscaled 4K mode capable of reaching 120 FPS on compatible hardware. This gives players the option to prioritize either image quality or higher frame rates depending on their display and hardware setup.

4A Games has also confirmed various bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements. While these changes may not be as immediately visible as upgraded textures or lighting, they should help make the overall experience smoother for both returning players and newcomers.

PC Version Adds DLSS and More Technical Improvements

PC players are receiving several additional features as part of the Metro Redux update.

The games will gain NVIDIA DLSS support, allowing compatible graphics cards to use AI-powered upscaling to improve performance while maintaining a high level of image quality. Hardware tessellation and displacement runtime features are also being introduced, giving the environments additional visual depth and detail.

There will also be PC-specific bug fixes and usability improvements. These additions are particularly relevant for players running the games on modern gaming PCs, as the original Redux releases were designed around hardware that is now considerably older.

Audio is also being upgraded through the addition of spatial audio support. Metro’s sound design has always been an important part of its atmosphere, especially when exploring dark tunnels and enclosed underground locations. More advanced spatial audio could make environmental sounds, distant enemies, machinery, and other effects feel more naturally positioned around the player.

PS5 and Xbox Series X|S Get Platform-Specific Features

The console versions are also receiving features designed specifically for current-generation hardware.

On Xbox Series X and Series S, the games will gain TSR upscaling and anti-aliasing improvements. The update will also add Xbox Play Anywhere, allowing players to access the supported versions across compatible Xbox devices and PC through the feature.

Xbox controllers will additionally support Impulse Triggers, providing more tactile feedback during gameplay. This should add another layer of immersion when using weapons and interacting with the game’s environments.

On PlayStation 5, the updated Metro games will support DualSense Adaptive Triggers. This can make weapons and other gameplay interactions feel more physical through the controller’s variable trigger resistance.

Players using the PS5 Pro will also benefit from PSSR, Sony’s PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution technology. The feature is designed to improve image reconstruction and help deliver a sharper presentation on supported hardware.

Both Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux will receive native support for PS5, PS5 Pro, and Xbox Series X|S, giving current-generation console players a more modern way to experience the two games.

The Metro Redux Update Will Be Free

One of the most notable aspects of the announcement is that existing owners will not have to purchase another version of the games.

The enhanced update will be available free of charge to players who already own Metro 2033 Redux or Metro: Last Light Redux. This means owners of the current Redux releases can take advantage of the new technical improvements without buying a separate remastered edition.

The release schedule is split between PC and consoles. The PC update will launch on October 22, while the console update will arrive on October 29.

4A Games has also made it clear that the announced features do not represent the complete list of changes. More details are expected to be revealed as the release date approaches, meaning additional improvements could still be announced.

A Modern Way to Return to the Metro Series

The timing of the update is also interesting for fans of the franchise. With another Metro game in development, these enhancements provide an opportunity for players to revisit the earlier games using modern hardware and features.

Rather than rebuilding Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light from the ground up, 4A Games is focusing on improving the existing Redux versions while preserving the games themselves. The combination of higher-quality assets, improved lighting, better performance, modern upscaling technologies, enhanced audio, and platform-specific controller features should make the two titles feel more at home on current-generation systems.

For longtime Metro fans, the free upgrade offers another reason to return to the tunnels. For players who have never experienced the first two games, the upcoming update could provide a technically refreshed entry point into one of gaming’s most atmospheric post-apocalyptic series.

With the PC version arriving on October 22 and the console update following on October 29, Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux are set to receive one of their most substantial technical upgrades yet.
