Media Molecule Next Game Leaked: Social Sim Aiming for 2027 Release
According to recent reports, Media Molecule's next game is a social simulator inspired by Animal Crossing, targeting a reveal and release in 2027.
Ever since Media Molecule officially wound down active development on its ambitious sandbox platform Dreams, gaming enthusiasts have been eager to know what the critically acclaimed developer is working on behind closed doors. Now, a fresh industry report has surfaced, offering compelling details about the studio’s secretive next title, including its genre, primary gameplay inspirations, and internal release window.
According to a new report from MP1st, which cites “sources familiar with the project,” the upcoming Media Molecule next game is currently targeted to be both announced and released in 2027. While game development remains inherently volatile and internal roadmaps are always subject to change, the outlet notes that the project will at the very least be officially unveiled to the public in 2027.
Moving Beyond Platformers to a Social Simulation Genre
Perhaps the most surprising revelation from the leak involves the core genre of the project. Rather than returning to the traditional puzzle-platformer roots that brought the studio widespread acclaim with titles like LittleBigPlanet and Tearaway, Media Molecule is reportedly venturing into entirely new territory.
Sources claim that the studio’s next major project will be a “social simulation” game heavily inspired by beloved franchise giants like Animal Crossing and Harvest Moon. Despite the current industry trend toward persistent live-service models, the report explicitly states that this title is not being designed as a Game-as-a-Service (GaaS) release.
This unexpected shift fits seamlessly with earlier rumors suggesting that Media Molecule’s mystery project would feature open-world elements. Combining open-world exploration with social simulation mechanics feels like a natural progression for a studio renowned for its charming art style, whimsical humor, and emphasis on player expression.

A Fresh Creative Chapter Following the End of Dreams
To understand the timeline of this upcoming release, it helps to look back at the studio’s recent history. The Guildford-based developer officially ended post-launch content support for Dreams in September 2023. However, the studio had already confirmed as early as April 2023 that a dedicated team was actively working on a completely new project.
By the time the reported 2027 release window arrives, the team will have spent nearly four to five years in active development on this new intellectual property. That generous timeline gives Media Molecule the runway needed to polish a robust, single-player or co-op social experience without the creative constraints or live-service pressures that plagued previous sandbox tools.
While many fans originally assumed the studio would play it safe by returning to classic platformers, taking a bold creative pivot into the cozy, social simulation genre could be exactly what Media Molecule needs to captivate a modern global audience once again.
